Political magic

Politics is indeed a blood sport. Look what happened to the Liberals and Bloc Quebecois in the recent federal election. The leaders were unseated and the parties beheaded. But the amputation didn’t end there. Some snouts were cut off from the public trough, and if it were not for gold plated pensions, many more would have suffered a similar fate. Oh, I know that phrases like blood sport, snout in the trough, and gold plated pensions are clichés. But clichés are ... (Continue reading)

What happened to all the pro-life Liberals?

What happened to all the pro-life Liberals?

When Tom Wappel was first elected to Parliament in 1988, he recalls that 40 per cent or more of the Liberal caucus was pro-life, or held traditional values.   But by the time he left federal politics and retired as MP for Scarborough Southwest in 2008, he was one of the last remaining pro-life MPs in caucus. The same year, fellow prolife Liberal Paul Steckle (Huron-Bruce) retired from politics. Judi Longfield, another pro-lifer, lost in ... (Continue reading)

Ottawa mayor attacked for declaring ‘Respect for Life Day’

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson paradoxically rushed to affirm his belief in the “right to choose” only hours after declaring an honorary day of recognition for the unborn’s right to life in Canada. As thousands of pro-lifers gathered on Parliament Hill May 12 to demand protections for Canada’s unborn, the mayor of Canada’s capital city is facing controversy over his declaration that May 12 is “Respect for Life Day” in honor of the National March for Life. “I don’t happen to agree with ... Green candidate brags about abortion

A Green Party candidate in the recent federal election said he was glad that his unborn child was aborted. According to the Terrace Standard, Roger Benham, running in the riding of Skeena-Bulkley Valley in British Columbia, inarticulatedly stated during the candidates’ debate on April 20 that “I am sick to death about hearing murdering babies.” After admitting that he got a woman pregnant when he was 25, he showed little remorse. “Thank God we decided to get rid of it,” Benham ... Ridings we watched

Ridings we watched

Last month, we reported on five ridings to watch. Here is what happened in those five races. Saanich-Gulf Islands Pro-life cabinet minister Gary Lunn was beaten by pro-abortion Green Party leader Elizabeth May, the first time the party of radical environmentalists has elected an MP to the House of Commons. May beat Lunn easily, 31,900 to 24,541, and was aided in the collapse of the combined Liberal and ... (Continue reading)

Conservatives win majority, but don’t expect much to change

Pro-lifers hold their own politically When the five-week campaign was done and all the votes were counted, the Conservative Party defied the pundits and won their elusive majority. After a campaign in which the three major parties courted the “family vote” and some opponents of the Tories, including a coalition of abortion advocates, attempted to paint Stephen Harper and the Conservatives as reactionary zealots bent on recriminalizing abortion and reversing same-sex ... New Brunswick cuts funding to radical feminists

The New Brunswick government is defending their decision to cut off all funding to the radically feminist N.B. Advisory Council on the Status of Women, which has been described as a “hub” for abortion activism in the province. Gwen Landolt, national vice-president of REAL Women Canada, praised the funding cut, saying these councils are an “anachronism” with an “inward-looking, narrow agenda” that portrays women as “victims in a patriarchal society.” Landolt asked, “They serve no purpose, so why should the New ... Pro-life parliamentarians and their bills and motions

Pro-life parliamentarians and their bills and motions

Over the past three decades, there have been dozens of pro-life private members bills and motions introduced in the House of Commons and Senate (as well as some pro-abortion ones). While none of them have passed – many were never voted on and some died when the House was prorogued or the Writ was dropped (thus ending Parliament), it is worth recognizing the work of some of the MPs who have ... Should we vote?

Let’s look at all these political parties craving for our votes in the forthcoming federal election. Are any of them worth voting for? The pro-abortion Bloc Québécois— the separatist party that wants Quebec to leave the country? I don’t think they are sincere. They know it would be like shooting the family cow which is the federal government’s $8.5 billion in equalization payments which Quebec gets every year from the taxpayers of ... (Continue reading)

Quebec minister slammed for grant to pro-life pregnancy centre

Quebec minister slammed for grant to pro-life pregnancy centre

Quebec’s Health Minister was forced to apologize and re-pledge his full commitment to the “right to choose” April 12 after the opposition slammed him for giving a grant to a pro-life pregnancy centre. “The position that’s very clear in Quebec is that it’s the woman who decides if, yes or no, she should continue her pregnancy. And we go further than that. We offer (abortion) free,” said Health Minister Yves Bolduc. Bolduc’s office gave $1,000 ... (Continue reading)

Party Leader Report Cards

Party Leader Report Cards

Michael Ignatieff:  F Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff seems bent on moving his party to a more radical position on abortion and family issues. He supports abortion-on-demand and believes it should be a “protected right”. In 2010, he pressed the government to include abortion as part of its G8 maternal health initiative. He supports same-sex “marriage.” In 2010, in support of a bill to add transgenderism and transsexualism to federal human ... (Continue reading)

Pre-campaign – Budget and contempt On March 22, the Conservatives introduced their 2011 federal budget which featured a number of family friendly items: the Family Caregiver Tax Credit (a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit up to $2,000 for those who care for dependent relatives), $3 million to “support the development of new community-integrated palliative care models,” and a 15 per cent Children’s Arts Tax Credit for sums up to $500 for ... Time for a referendum on abortion funding

Time for a referendum on abortion funding

Every year since 1976, the United States Congress has adopted the “Hyde Amendment,” a legislative enactment banning the use of federal funds to pay for abortions except in the case of rape, incest or danger to the life of  the mother. In addition, most of the states likewise ban public funding for abortions. Within the United States, these measures have widespread public support. In a typical nationwide survey conducted last year, the independent ... (Continue reading)
