American fast-food chain Chick-fil-A has come under fire for its president’s stance on the traditional family. During an interview with The Baptist Press, CEO and president Dan Cathy said he was “guilty as charged” regarding being pro-family. “We are very supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God ... (Continue reading)
The man who has been extolled as a “hero” after putting a stop to what could have been a much worse tragedy at the Washington D.C.-based Family Research Council (FRC), has been released from hospital. Leo Johnson was shot in the arm August 15 shortly around 10 am, after confronting a gunman who allegedly walked into FRC’s building, expressed disagreement with the organization’s politics, and opened fire. Despite being shot, Leo was able to subdue the shooter and call for ... (Continue reading)
I suppose I’m old-fashioned. I thought teachers were supposed to teach, to make sure young people could read and write, do math, know some history and geography, perhaps some economics, and certainly some science. I don’t think media studies is a real subject, and sociology should only be a graduate level course. But this is nothing compared to what is going on today in many school boards, where legions of toxins ... (Continue reading)
A Catholic parents’ group is urging Catholic trustees to refuse to comply with Ontario’s anti-bullying law that forces Gay-Straight-Alliance clubs into separate schools. Instead, the parents are asking trustees to follow the bishops’ “Respecting Difference” strategy for tackling bullying. “A legal opinion we obtained (from lawyer Geoff Cauchi of RZCD Law Firm) argues Catholic trustees are obliged to refuse to implement Gay-Straight Alliances in Catholic schools,” said Teresa Pierre, head of Parents As First Educators (PAFE), at a news conference in ... This June I interviewed Jessie Sansone on my Sun News TV show – the name of the man may not resister with most readers, but how about The Crayon Dad? This is the 26-year-old man who, earlier this year in Kitchener, Ont., was handcuffed, arrested, and strip-searched by the police, and whose three children were removed by the Children’s Aid Society, all because his four-year-old daughter had drawn a picture at school ... The movement to cull the population of the developing world has taken a leap forward due to the work of a high-profile advocate. Melinda Gates, wife of the famous founder of Microsoft, used the multi-billion dollar charitable Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to co-sponsor, along with the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, a family planning summit in London with the goal of raising billions to expand poor women’s access to contraceptives. At ... (Continue reading)
The Newseum's top ten newspaper covers today are on Chick-fil-A. (HT: Michelle Malkin) The Washington Post reported customer support for the restaurant made for brisk business and Rick Warren tweeted "#ChickfilA has already set a world record today." A quick perusal of the internet will find long lines of customers in stores and drive-throughs. It was pretty obviously a good day to be a Chick-fil-A franchise owner and it was also a strong statement that those who support traditional ... (Continue reading)
On June 13 Bill 33, a private members bill in the Ontario legislature that would add “gender expression” and “gender identity” to the Ontario Human Rights Code and give special legal protection to people who self-identify as transgender and transsexual, passed with all-party support in an unrecorded vote. Opponents of Bill 33 and similar bills at the federal level have called the amendments to human rights legislation the “Bathroom Bill” because among other consequences it would allow men access to female ... Culture matters. I would carve these words on stone slabs and hand deliver them to every conservative and pro-life organization in the English-speaking world if I thought that it would make a difference, but I’m no longer sure it will. We may, I fear, have absented ourselves from culture and the arts for so long that everything we do now is a rear guard action, fought on the outskirts of the ... (Continue reading)
Catholic school funding questioned in aftermath After facing months of protests by pro-family and religious groups, the McGuinty government rammed Bill 13, the so-called Accepting Schools Act, through committee for a final vote on June 5. Bill 13 passed 65-36. Although the Accepting Schools Act was presented as a broad-based anti-bullying initiative, its focus is on promoting homosexual rights in schools, including the province’s publicly funded Catholic school system. ... Problem Gambling in Canada by Lorne Tepperman and Kristy Wanner (Oxford, $21.95, 240 pages) The Ontario government recently announced its plans to overhaul the provincial gambling system. According to Finance Minister Dwight Duncan, this would increase revenue and job opportunities. The overhaul would include a new casino in the Greater Toronto Area, an expansion in lottery ticket sales and slot machines, and the creation of an online gaming site. While Ontario and ... Another tax season has come and gone. There is no other time of the year where I reveal my number-crunching-nerd-self to the world more than during tax-time. My goal as the stay-at-home wife is to read up on taxes and file them to maximize our benefits as a family. Unfortunately for my finances (although not for my family), the thing stopping my husband and I from really maximizing on the deductions ... (Continue reading)
The premise of the documentary The Other F Word is that there’s something outlandish, even implausible, in the spectacle of a man who’s made his living and his name as a punk rock musician taking on the role of a father. It’s an idea made visible by the image on the film’s poster and DVD packaging, of Lars Frederiksen from the punk band Rancid, with his hair dyed in leopard spots, ... (Continue reading)
On March 26, the Ontario Court of Appeal upheld most of a 2010 Ontario Superior Court decision that struck down restrictions on prostitution. In 2010, Judge Susan G. Himel ruled that the provisions of the Criminal Code that restricted abortion – prohibitions on keeping a common bawdy-house (brothel), living off the avails of prostitution, and communicating for the purpose of prostitution in public. At a time when the Robert Picton case (a ... (Continue reading)
Over the past 30 years, freedom of religion in Canada has come under increasing attack by unprincipled judicial activists and authoritarian politicians. Now the Supreme Court of Canada and the Legislature of Quebec have taken this proclivity to a new extreme, by arbitrarily decreeing that Christian parents no longer have an inalienable right to shelter their children from anti-Christian propaganda in elementary and secondary schools. At issue is a controversial course in ... (Continue reading)
