Canada's pro-life community was shocked with news of the death of activist Maurice Lewis of British Columbia.  Lewis's body was discovered September 5 in the cab of his tractor trailer. The rig was stopped at a rest area on Highway 17 about 32 kilometers north of Wawa, Ontario. 

It was Lewis's arrest at a Vancouver abortion clinic that led to the NDP government's Bubble Zone law being thrown out. The 
law was subsequently reinstated upon appeal by the government. A further appeal by Lewis is still pending. 

Lewis led a simple life with a solid commitment to his faith. It is significant that news of Lewis's death came only minutes after 
the news of the death of his inspiration, Mother Teresa. Both worked relentlessly for the unborn with the most basic motivation 
- "To be the voice for the voiceless" 

In a September 10 statement, the Wawa detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police said a post-mortem revealed the cause of 
death to be asphyxia. The police termed the death accidental, adding that "no foul play was involved." 

Constable Walker of the Wawa detachment told The Interim September 18 that the police investigation into Lewis's death is 
continuing, but they do not anticipate any new information to come to light. 

Pro-life supporters throughout the country are bothered by the lack of details into the Lewis death. Lewis was a veteran truck 
driver and it is unlikely he would have carelessly exposed the cab interior to lethal carbon monoxide exhaust. 

Pro-lifers suggest the police conclusion of an accidental death - based solely on a post-mortem - could be premature. They 
eagerly await details of a full autopsy. Meanwhile Paul Formby, the lawyer who represented Lewis in his legal battles, is 
considering a plan to continue the challenge of the province's Bubble Zone law.
