Sportswriter upset with Canucks anthem singer
Donnelly is a Vancouver opera singer who is well-known for singing the anthem at NHL hockey games for the Vancouver Canucks. While acknowledging that Donnelly is a practicing Catholic and his brother is a priest, Harrison Mooney, the Yahoo! Columnist, still finds this “an incredibly divisive and public stance for someone so closely linked to the Canucks to take,” especially for “an organization committed to building the most fan-friendly, inclusive, inoffensive brand as possible.” He claims that it associates Donnelly’s rendition of the national anthem with “abortion opponents” and “some pretty gruesome images.” He suggested that the team and Donnelly might need to end their relationship.
Andrea Mrozek commented on her ProWomanProLife blog that “You would never, EVER, ever, EVER see this article if Mark Donnelly…had sung the national anthem at a pro-choice event.”
