Abortion and the Charter of Rights

The definitive decision on the abortion issue under the Charter of Rights was the Morgentaler case, handed down by the Supreme Court of Canada in January 1988. In that decision, the Supreme Court struck down the abortion provision (Section 251) of the Criminal Code, which prohibited abortions except when necessary to safeguard a woman’s “life or health” and after approval by a hospital abortion committee. ... Complaints against McMurtry rejected

Perhaps not surprisingly, the entity that oversees the conduct of judges in Canada – which, remarkably, is itself made up exclusively of judges – has ruled that Ontario’s chief justice did not act improperly in two matters: when he legalized so-called same-sex marriage in his province in 2003, despite the fact his daughter was involved in a same-sex relationship at the time, and when he partied ... A turn for the better at Carleton U

On Jan. 9, the Carleton University Students Association voted in favour of granting the campus pro-life group, Carleton LifeLine, club status. This came after much controversy and concern from a motion put forward and accepted by CUSA in December, that seemed to make it impossible for any group opposed to abortion to attain official club status. LifeLine threatened legal action and both the university and students ... (Continue reading)

Good things happen at Christmas time

At Christmas time, good things happen at Aid to Women in downtown Toronto. Last Christmas, a friend who was “moving and downsizing” donated beautiful Christmas decorations. “They were gone in no time,” recalls Ann Wilson, director of Aid to Women. One month before Christmas, another friend sent word that a certain lady wanted to donate gifts to a dozen or so women on Aid to Women’s support list — ... (Continue reading)

Status of Women, Canada’s federal agency promoting feminism in Parliament for over 30 years, is under scrutiny and fighting back, all at taxpayers’ expense, says REAL Women of Canada, a national pro-marriage, pro-family women’s rights organization. Status of Women, established by the Trudeau Liberals in 1973 to promote “gender equity” in Canadian politics, has engineered a “counter offensive” ... (Continue reading)

Good News Corner Fredericton ‘welcome house’ saves lives

Six years ago, Peter Ryan, his wife Suzie and their seven daughters drove across Canada in the family van from Vancouver (where he gave up an executive pro-life position) to his hometown of Fredericton. Because he had heard that a Morgentaler abortuary was opening in his traditionally pro-life province of New Brunswick, he decided with quiet reserve to do something ... (Continue reading)
