Planned Parenthood often bills itself as the largest volunteer organization in the world. Indeed, pro-life/pro-family advocates know it to be a huge monolith – no matter what country they set their eyes to prey upon. And they’re getting bigger. A $200,000 grant to Planed Parenthood USA will enable this huge conglomerate to continue and expand its presence on a new culture – the worldwide web. Just a year and a half ago, PP’s presence on the internet was sporadic ... (Continue reading)
The Barrie Examiner, on October 17, 1996, proclaimed, Planned Parenthood coming to Barrie. Kelly Redmond, a Planned Parenthood volunteer, was quoted in the article saying that PP will be instrumental in increasing accessibility to services not now available in Barrie. Redmond left no doubt that one of these services is abortion. Another spokesperson for the new group, Bette Vanderwater, is a researcher and evaluator for “Best Start, Barrie,” an organization into which the former NDP government put ... (Continue reading)
WASHINTON –The president of Life Decisions International (LDI), a Planned Parenthood watchdog group, has criticized a December advertisement by PP’s Minnesota/ South Dakota affiliate, which denigrates giving birth. Douglas Scott, president of LDI, said the Planned Parenthood ad “says it all with regard to the organization’s attitude toward childbirth.” The ad reads as follows: “Babies are loud, smelly, and expensive. Unless you want one. We exist to make sure babies are both planned and wanted. To discuss birth ... (Continue reading)
The influence of the International Planned Parenthood Federation makes it a subject of debate in a wide range of publications. The most recent issue of Catholic World Report (January, 1997) for example, features the say, The War on Population, Continued by noted economist and Professor Jacqueline Kasun. Kasun’s central argument is compelling, not only for its references to Planned Parenthood, but for reminding readers of the dangers posed by population control advocates. She argues that for ... Recently two school boards in opposite ends of Canada, B.C. and Ontario, voted to remove Planned Parenthood sex education programs from their schools. Why? What is it about this organization and its programs that create such controversy? If we ignore their statement on being “pro-choice”, Planned Parenthood seems benign enough. It appears to be an open-minded, tolerant group, respectful of the opinions of others. Planned Parenthood is especially concerned with teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS. These ... (Continue reading)
George Grant, Grand Illusions: The Legacy of Planned Parenthood, 2nd edition (Franklin, Tennessee: Adroit Press, 1992), 314pp. and Douglas Scott, Bad Choices: A Look Inside Planned Parenthood (Franklin, Tennessee: Legacy Communications, 1992), 294pp. Reviews by David Curtin In Grand Illusions: The Legacy of Planned Parenthood, George Grant urges that Planned Parenthood was founded on a mixture of ideologies-including racism and sexual libertinism-and that those ideologies persist in the movement to this day. He bases his argument on the writings ... (Continue reading)
The steady growth of International Planned Parenthood Federation has spawned something of an industry of criticism and exposes. Many of the studies are exhaustive, richly- detailed works, which generally relate the life and ideals of Margaret Sanger to present-day Planned Parenthood initiatives. A useful addition to the reading list is the Human Life International booklet Deadly Deception. This instructive and concise work offers a penetrating expose of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. The book exists in six volumes, one for ... (Continue reading)
When Life Decisions International President Douglas Scott was asked to deliver an address on Planned Parenthood in 1981, little did he know it would lead to a significant career shift. The former executive director of Arizona Right to Life and vice-president of the Christian Action Council, Scott found a receptive audience for his speech. The response led him to further research into Planned Parenthood, particularly its pervasive influence with U.S. policy makers and in the school system. “I ... (Continue reading)
Planned Parenthood’s international efforts to promote birth-control and the abortion/contraception mentality have not gone unchallenged by the pro-life community. In 1992, a group of North American pro-life authorities came together to form Life Decisions International (LDI), an Amherst, New York-based organization dedicated to challenging Planned Parenthood’s agenda worldwide. Led by president Douglas Scott and executive director Patricia Bainbridge, LDI offers parents concrete action to counter the Planned Parenthood efforts in schools, in the local community and the corporate ... A reading of various Planned Parenthood publications gives only a vague explanation of the aims of the organization both globally and on the national scene. The literature attempts to paint a picture of a caring, social committed organization dedicated to providing education and information on matters relating to sexual health, family stability and women’s empowerment. Often the language appearing in these publications is replete with jargon and ambiguity. It sounds harmless on the surface, but a deeper ... (Continue reading)
CHARLETTETOWN –Planned Parenthood’s efforts to reestablish a Prince Edward Island chapter reveal restlessness on the part of the worldwide contraception-promoting organization. Despite being rejected by local residents in 1982, Planned Parenthood spent a good part of 1996 attempting to convince the provincial government that it enjoys a measure of community support. “If ever there was a place that needed Planned Parenthood, it’s PEI,” said Bonnie Johnson, the federation’s Executive Director, in a fund-raising letter circulated last summer. In attempting to justify Planned ... (Continue reading)
Many biographies of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger are extremely sympathetic to their subject, some to the point of fawning. The Sanger life is an interesting one, from her birth in upstate New York in 1879, to her death in Tuscon, Arizona in September, 1996. Whatever one’s views on abortion, contraception and family planning, there is little doubt Sanger’s formative years and her rise as a champion of American feminism, social reform and “reproductive choice”, make for ... Writers reflect on Planned Parenthood impact Interim Special A number of voices over the years have described the International Planned Parenthood Federation in terms not likely to be found in the organization’s self-serving literature. Many of these sources cite Planned Parenthood’s participation in attempts to undermine the traditional family as a means of promoting its new vision. In her 1988 work, The War Against Population, Dr. Jacqueline Kasun described how efforts to promote widespread sex education in schools in the mid-1960s often ... (Continue reading)
The spate of “bombings” in the days leading up to the January 22 anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion made for interesting reading. Who cares if the reports were short on fact and long on innuendo? Explosions did in fact take place near abortuaries in Atlanta and Tulsa. Six people were injured in the Atlantic explosion and while no one was injured in Tulsa, there was some minor property damage. The blasts, and a third firecracker-type explosion in ... The Pro-Life Society of British Columbia has learned that the national president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada –a long time activist of Planned Parenthood of British Columbia –is helping run a Vancouver abortuary, and possibly conducting her Planned Parenthood work out of a taxpayer-funded hospital. Barbara Hestrin is the Program Director at the British Columbia Women’s Hospital and Health Centre Society (and is) assisting in the operation of the CARE abortuary. A letter, co-signed by Hestrin and circulated ... (Continue reading)
