Alberta: Calgary’s surrogate mother service

An increasing demand for children available for adoption has led a Calgary-area man, David Fielding, to set up a private adoption and surrogate motherhood agency. In a few weeks, he has already signed up 65 childless couples, at an annual registration fee of $5 and six women have come forward as surrogate mothers.             Mr. Fielding emphasizes that his service will turn down women who want a fee for their services as birth mothers and stresses that his main purpose is to ... Nairobi and the UN- changing the family by decree

The situation struck me as ironic. I was at a meeting on women’s rights, attended mostly by older women, women wealthy enough that they had been able to stay at home to raise their children (and to have nice homes to raise them in). Yet they were sitting around me discussing how today’s young mothers could get out of their homes, leave their children, and centre their lives on getting ahead in business, politics and academics.             I was attending a ... Mother’s role superseded by “professionals”

We are about to be conned again. This time it is the daycare question. A federal task force likely will give it solid endorsement, while much of the Big Media see proliferating daycare as a desirable objective.   But is it? As I noted in an earlier column, in Sweden daycare has become a nightmare where parents now are compelled to send their children to “professional” daycare centres.   Parents have lost most of their rights as parents, while top-level social workers, ... Teens and suicide

Suicide is now the leading cause of death among teenagers, according to a federal government task force, whose five-year study is expected to be released this summer.   Psychologist, Dr. Diane Syer-Solursh, head of the task force, announced some of its findings at an April meeting of the American Association of Suicidology in Toronto.   Dr. Syer-Solursh pointed out that, in 1983, nearly 4,000 Canadians killed themselves, and the numbers increase yearly. More than 75 percent of the total suicides are men, ... (Continue reading)

Hansard: House of Commons Report: Lesbians

On March 26 the House of Commons Justice Committee agreed to refer the issue of “sexual orientation” to a sub-committee to see whether it qualifies as a form of discrimination prohibited in the Charter of Rights.   New Democrat MP Svend Robinson, (Burnaby) introduced a private member’s bill calling for the inclusion of sexual orientation in the Charter. If accepted, homosexuality/lesbianism would have to be treated by everyone as a perfectly normal and acceptable lifestyle. Opposition to it would ... (Continue reading)

Rock and obscenity

How may parents listen to the rock music that most children and adolescents dance to, do homework to and fall asleep with? How many parents realize that rock lyrics have become sexually explicit and background sound effects crudely reinforce the intent of this musical pornography?             Prince, one of today’s biggest stars, has sold over nine million copies of his album, Purple Rain. One song on the album, “Darling Nikki,” contains the following:   Met a girl named Nikki. Guess you could say ... (Continue reading)

Canadian nurses: attempt to violate conscience

The Canadian Nurse of March 1985, printed a summary of the Canadian Nurses Association’s (CNA) position on “nursing’s role in family planning.” It noted that the CNA had developed a number of position statements on nursing in health care and stated:   In its statement on nursing’s role in family planning, adopted in June, 1982, CNA recognizes that family planning is part of individual, family and community health care. CNA also believes that a part of the nurse’s role is to offer ... (Continue reading)

Saskatchewan should lead

Gay Caswell, MLA (PC—Saskatoon Westmount) told the 250 pro-lifers attending the Moose Jaw Right to Life 10th anniversary banquet recently that they are trailblazers, “fighting the most important fight in the world today.”   Pro-lifers are fighting “all those who have declared war on the family – those who would see the institution of the family destroyed,” Mrs. Caswell said. And, she added, it is the unborn who are the first victims in this war.   Mrs. Caswell urged Saskatchewan to lead the pro-family ... (Continue reading)

Alberta: Feminist Attacks pro-family movement

On March 15, 1985 at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Dr. Margrit Eichler spoke on “The Anti-Family effects of Familism on Social Policy.”  In this talk she labeled the pro-family movement, consisting of groups such as R.E.A.L. Women of Canada, the Alberta Federation of Women United for Families, and the Saskatchewan Federation for Families, as being anti-feminist.  “Familism”is a movement, she said, which argues for restoration of the patriarchal system.  With their pessimistic view of recognizing one type ... U.N. to reshape the Canadian family?

In 1981 the Federal government ratified a United Nations Convention which, if fully integrated into Canadian legislation, stands to change the family both in its legal rights and in its social patterns.  Ostensibly this document, The United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women, is an international agreement to help guarantee equal rights for women.  Beneath the surface rhetoric, however, it is clear that the rights demanded, and the assumptions of the ... Women for life, faith and family

I ended my column last month with an item of good news for a change. The bad news was that, as usual, my column was too long and the good news was announced on the next page of the paper. Unfortunately, the direction to continue reading on the on following page was taken by the gremlins somewhere between the layout and printing process. The good news was that a group called Women for Life, Faith and Family (a ... (Continue reading)

Men and abortion

Men are just as traumatized by abortion as women, says a new study released at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association. (Medical News, November 22 1984) The study found that 69 per cent of the men wanted to be with their partner during the abortion;91 per cent wanted to be in the recovery room. 17 per cent were so upset by their abortion experience that they were uncertain that they ever wanted to be faced with another ... Part II: Beyond outrage; the effects of pornography

Effects on rape behavior, and the rape myth The effects of pornography are clear and disturbing. Research by the University of Indiana psychologist Dolf Zillman has demonstrated that repeated massive exposure to nonviolent, noncoercive standard-fare pornography can lead to increasing callousness toward women and to the trivialization of rape as a criminal offence by both men and women. Following repeated exposure to nonviolent, noncoercive pornography, Zillman found, on the one hand, that his subjects became increasingly desensitized to this ... (Continue reading)
