Turning knowledge into action

It is too-common, although understandable, that many pro-lifers are suffering from abortion or same-sex “marriage” fatigue. Informed social conservatives and people of faith have been barraged by news, debates and other information about redefining marriage to include homosexual couples over the past few years. Many pro-lifers have been reading not only The Interim, but our daily online service, LifeSiteNews.com, and other pro-life publications for years. Unfortunately, some grassroots supporters – even some ... (Continue reading)

Martin’s business as usual

When he was a candidate for the Liberal leadership in 2003, Paul Martin promised to do something about the “democratic deficit.” He said he would implement an accountable and transparent process to appoint judges and end the practice of rewarding political cronies with plum appointments. On both counts, he has broken his promise. In August 2004, Martin appointed a pair of radical feminists to the Supreme Court ... (Continue reading)

Annan must go

The problems at the United Nations – from the 1975 resolution declaring Zionism a form of racism to the massive oil-for-food scandal that enriched Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (as well as several UN officials and their business associates), to its inaction in genocides in Rwanda and Sudan, to the sexual abuse of locals at the hands ... Teachers’ union hypocrisy

Chris Kempling, the British Columbia teacher suspended by the B.C. College of Teachers, must be shaking his head. In 2003, he was punished for writing letters to the editor of his local paper voicing concern over the promotion of homosexuality in the classroom. The British Columbia Federation of Teachers, his union, was eventually forced to fund Kempling’s legal bills, although it repeatedly tried to skirt its responsibility on this matter despite a ... So many rights, so little dignity

When Quebec MP Francine Lalonde proposed Bill C-407, an amendment to the Criminal Code that would legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, she did so with reference to the “right to die with dignity.” Abortion advocates regularly justify pre-natal infanticide with the so-called “right to choose.” And when marriage was redefined in Canadian law to include same-sex unions, it was done in the name of “minority rights’ supposedly enshrined in the Charter of ... Gay ‘marriage’ now law

In the month of June, a parliamentary committee held hearings on C-38, the government’s same-sex “marriage” legislation. The House accepted the committee’s report, debated the issue, considered amendments and passed the bill 158-133 on June 28. The next day, the bill received first reading in the Senate, which proceeded to conduct its own hearings, close down debate and pass it by a 47-21 vote on July 19. The bill received ... Police who truly serve and protect

Grace Petrasek The Interim Something unusual happened at Toronto’s downtown Aid to Women office last fall, just before Robert retired as a full-time sidewalk and office counsellor. A distraught young father was refused entrance to the next-door abortuary to say a final goodbye to his girlfriend (probably both college or university students). Fortunately, the police came to his rescue within minutes, responding to a rare call for help from Aid to Women. This ... (Continue reading)

Robinson vs. Grewal

As if we needed any further evidence of media bias, witness the difference in treatment in the coverage of the “stress leaves” taken by MP Gurmant Grewal and former MP Svend Robinson. Robinson took his leave after being caught pilfering a $50,000 diamond ring. He made the ludicrous claim his “stress” was caused by a serious injury suffered seven years earlier, yet no media outlet ever questioned how he managed to ... (Continue reading)

Dishonourable mention

There are many problems with universities in North America. They have been described as “island(s) of repression in a sea of freedom.” But the University of Western Ontario’s move to confer an honourary doctorate upon notorious Canadian abortionist Henry Morgentaler is a new low. The blatant political stunt by the university’s senate has not only irreparably damaged the reputation of UWO, but has tainted the very academic awards it was founded ... (Continue reading)

The Queen’s Good Servant

Canadians have long had a jaundiced view of politicians but recent maneuvering on Parliament Hill have been particularly ugly. Paul Martin’s shameless use of political carrots and sticks show that is his desire to hold power trumps all. Thank goodness there are still some MPs who have the courage of their conscience – MPs like Pat O’Brien. On June 6, O’Brien left the Liberal party, ... (Continue reading)

I am a Canadian

Jacob Birth Special to The Interim Hey, I’m not a redneck or a fascist! I don’t live in the 1950s or suffer from homophobia or casually deny others their rights! I have gay friends, wore pink to my Grade 8 graduation, but still don’t get Queer Eye. I believe marriage is religious, not civil. I believe the law came to regulate marriage by adopting it, not creating it. I believe that marriage ... (Continue reading)

It’s our country, too

In recent years, we have witnessed the abuse of power by both Jean Chretien and Paul Martin’s Liberal governments in Ottawa. They have used that power to entrench themselves as the “Natural Governing Party,” reward their friends and foist upon this nation their own radical views. The scandal of Adscam and the scandal of redefining marriage are part of the same problem: the Liberal government ... (Continue reading)

Mixed bag of Conservative party conservatism

Delegates support traditional marriage, but ‘wimp-out’ on abortion In the beginning The founding convention of the Conservative Party of Canada marked the beginning of a new phase in the pro-life movement’s - specifically Campaign Life Coalition’s - political efforts on behalf of the unborn. It also most definitely ended another era. In ... (Continue reading)

Who is ‘mainstream’?

The conventions of the Liberal and Conservative parties, which were both held in March, provided not just an opportunity to look at the differences between the parties, but also to better understand the media that covered them. In the eyes of journalists, the Liberals, who considered legalizing same-sex “marriage,” marijuana and prostitution, are not merely progressive, but “mainstream;” that is, ... (Continue reading)

Keep up the fight

As the debate over the definition of marriage continues to wind its way through the parliamentary process, a reminder to our readers to keep up your efforts to contact your MPs and let them know where you stand on the issue. Despite mainstream media reports that may suggest otherwise, MPs are getting flooded with ... (Continue reading)
