Editor’s note regarding Father Ted’s column Fr. Ted Colleton has been writing columns for The Interim almost since the first issue – nearly a quarter-century of monthly reflections on life, family and religion. This might surprise people who have heard Fr. Ted give a homily at a church or speak at a pro-life event, but Father doesn’t feel that he has much left to say. In recent years, many of his columns ... (Continue reading)
The provincial election on March 28 constituted for Quebec a new era in its political history. Since 1970, the fundamental question in Quebec politics has been the independence of Quebec, with a polarization between the federalist Liberals and the separatist Péquistes. The major breakthrough of Action démocratique du Québec’s Mario Dumont, who is now the official opposition ... (Continue reading)
In the 1980s, we were introduced to the phrase “safe sex.” The phrase was later amended to “safer sex” since no condom is 100 per cent effective. While the phrase changed, the message to children did not: “Engage in sexual relations if you feel you are ready. And if you feel you are ready, be responsible and use protection - rely on condoms.” With the rampant increase in unplanned pregnancies and ... (Continue reading)
A few years ago, the fame show Family Feud posed the question: “What do twelve year olds wait for?” A phone call, their report cards, and Christmas were among the top answers. But one day last month, a twelve year old at the North York Crisis Pregnancy Centre was waiting for something else. You guessed it- the results of her pregnancy test. Jesse Beck, Director of the centre, glanced at the youngster sitting in her office- hair dishevelled, dark eyes forlorn, ... (Continue reading)

Before even leaving the hospital after my second child, I was visited by a family planning nurse. She talked to me about the importance of spacing children and using contraception “for at least a year,” until my body was ready to have another child. “Are you using contraception?” she asked. “Well no, my husband and I are practicing Natural Family Planning>” “NFP! That doesn’t work, you should be using the pill.” This response is typical of doctors and nurses across North America. How ... (Continue reading)
As the federal election draws closer it has become clear that Canada will not be governed by a pro-life political party with a pro-life leader come October 26. The major parties, of which one will certainly form the government, have indicated their reluctance to address the issues of abortion and euthanasia. In the absence of a pro-life leader and pro-life policy, what can pro-life members of Parliament do? Plenty! Pro-life members of Parliament from all political parties can keep the ... NATIONAL BORDERS ARE NOT IMPORTANT IN GOD’S EYES. WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT IS THAT ALL PEOPLE RESPECT THE LAW OF GOD AND IN PARTICULAR THE SANCTITY OF LIFE. IF BABIES ARE NOT SAFE EVERYWHERE THEY ARE NOT SAFE ANYWHERE. Mike Gerrety Police Chief Mike Gerrety had only six years to go before retirement on a comfortable pension. He might have retreated from the problems of the world to enjoy the company of his family. Instead, he took up the cause of the unborn. He ... (Continue reading)
On Mother's Day we held our fourth annual Rally and Walk. As in previous years, it was a tremendous success. In spite of its success, some people have asked if we feel it is effective - doing the same thing year after year, and is it, in any way, helping to stop abortions? Without hesitation, I answer "yes" to both questions, but perhaps for a different reason that you might expect. Our large membership has supported us every step of the way ... (Continue reading)
