Pro-life youth gives hope for future

I am writing to you in regards to the article in the January edition of The Interim, "Student censured for pro-life shirt." Often I find the reading of The Interim rather depressing because it reports mainly on the inroads being made by those who think that religion and morals are old-fashioned. God and family life are being attacked in public, by the government, schools (including Catholic), the courts, etc.

Therefore, it is so refreshing to read about Lisa Klassen and how she dares to stand up for what she believes. It seems that any message is allowed, providing it has nothing to do with morals. Had you given this young lady's address I would have written her directly. Now a letter to the paper will have to do. I do hope, however, that she gets to see this. Lisa: you've got what it takes and it is young people like you, who give me, a senior, hope for the future. Many parents would be proud to have a daughter like you! Please do not give in.

What a six out of 10 on abortion might mean

Tony Clement tells us he does not condone the murder of helpless unborn children, except three or four times out of 10 (January Interim, "Ontario PC Leadership Race"). At least that's one way of reading his metaphorical scale. What does that mean? Presumably, it means he wants both the pro-life vote and the pro-abortion vote. Like all "personally opposed but" politicians he claims to be with Christ and against Christ at the same time. Would Trudeau ever have predicted that his spirit of compromise would one day infiltrate the leadership race of the Ontario Conservative Party? Nice legacy, Pierre.

Whatcott explains importance of his fight

I would like to clarify an error in the article, "Whatcott facing jail over pro-life pamphlets," (January 2002). Your writer quoted my lawyer, Mr. Schuck, as saying, "I'm going to help Bill, but not actually represent him in the courtroom." This statement is not correct. Mr. Schuck will have me represent myself if I am not able to raise enough money to retain his services. However, we both agree that it will go better if I am able to raise enough money to retain his services and he is able to be in the courtroom with me.

It is my hope to be able to raise $2,000 in order to have proper representation at my appeal and have thus far raised $300, which will enable Mr. Schuck's law firm to do research, although I will not have legal representation for the appeal. I hope the pro-life community supports this appeal. I do not mind losing and going to jail for four days, if that was all that was at stake. I would not bother wasting precious pro-life time and resources to avoid four days in jail. What readers must understand is the precedent that will be set if I lose this appeal.

The University of Regina is arguing that it is private property and that off campus groups have no Charter right to communicate with its students through literature distribution. The university faculty and the student newspaper is overwhelmingly secular, pro-homosexual and pro-abortion. Distributing pro-life literature on campus brings another point of view to the students that they may not be able to hear otherwise. This can literally save lives, if one is persuasive and gives a proper defence of the pro-life point of view. A publicly funded university that is given the mandate of providing higher education to our future decision-makers must not be allowed to shut down pro-life expression. Mr. Schuck agrees with me that the case is winnable in the high court of Saskatchewan. It's my prayer that pro-lifers will catch the vision and back a winner, thereby setting a precedent in favour of life and democracy. The real winner won't be me, it will be mothers and children who are able to hear life-affirming truth as a result of a pro-life precedent being set.
