August 2001

The International Congress For the Dignity of the Child was held at Roma Hall in Warsaw, Poland, May 18-20, 2001 under the auspices of Cardinal Jozef Glemp, Primate of Poland and organized by the Friends of Human Life Club and Human Life International (Europa). Organizations that assisted the organizers included the International Right to Life Federation (IRLF), Polish Federation of Pro-Life Movements and several other Polish pro-life, pro-family organizations. The topics were wide and varied - from education to the family to protection for the unborn - but were tied to the theme of respecting the dignity of the child.

Campaign Life Coalition National President Jim Hughes was one of the more than 40 speakers. He told the Interim that the throng of (mostly Polish) participants exuded as "incredible pro-life spirit" and noted that there were an "extraordinary number of high-ranking politicians" present at the conference, including Polish Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek who addressed the council.

Hughes was part of the IRLF board contingent, of which he is a member. The IRLF board members stayed at the Redemptorist monastery in Warsaw, where 30 Redemptorist priests were murdered in 1939. After the conference, board members went on a sightseeing excursion to Birkeneau and Aushwitz.
