Detained 42 days in psych ward, activist plans suit

A Colorado man’s unauthorized detention in a psychiatric hospital was the direct result of his opposition to abortion, say several U.S. pro-life officials. Kenneth Scott of Denver, a long-time pro-life activist, was arrested December 20 and spent the next 42 days in the Boulder Community Hospital psychiatric ward. He was released without conditions January 30. Scott plans to file a lawsuit against [...]

CFCA has spread through more than 23 nations

Images from the Third World flash across the TV screen followed by a plea for help to sponsor a child. The sponsoring agency is either secular or evangelical. Moved by what you see, and a desire to help, you take down the number and wonder why the Catholic church is not offering the opportunity to sponsor a child. This was the experience [...]

Book’s non-confrontational approach opens new doors

“Educators have been fed misinformation from higher sources who have hidden agendas. These are the facts. This is the truth about the risks.” If you want ammunition to show the school board that sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are on the rise, and chastity, not the condom, is the answer, you have it in Dr. Rosemarie Gilbert’s resource booklet, Adolescent Sexuality. “I want [...]

Cartoonist’s subject is no laughing matter

“There’s nothing funny about porn,” says artist and child therapist Anita Oliveira, but that didn’t stop her from creating Watch Out, a comic book to fight pornography. If you think only adult men are into porn wake up. The largest users of porn are boys 12 to 17 years old. To reach this group the comic format is ideal. “All my problems [...]

One night in Chinatown

Alan Keyes, the strongly pro-life Republican candidate for President of the United States summed up the abortion issue recently when he thundered that there is no right to do wrong. The Canadian Abortion Rights League (CARAL) held a banquet on a cold and blustery evening in a restaurant in Toronto’s Chinatown to honour Norma Scarborough, a former school secretary, and Michelle Landsberg [...]

A Courageous Cardinal

When I was a newcomer to Kenya many years ago (1942), I remember hearing a lot from the priests on the staff of Mangu High School about a boy named Maurice Otunga. Maurice was the star player on the school soccer team and apart from his skill in shooting goals; he was noted for his physical courage. He was the son of [...]

The deficit builder bows out

I attended the wake at Queen’s Park recently for Bob Rae’s exit from the Ontario political scene. It was held in one of the big rooms where we normally hold our Christmas party, in order to accommodate the NDP party loyalists, loud lighters and heavy hand clappers. The Toronto Star editorial following Rae’s registration headline: “Rae served Canada and Ontario well” and [...]

B.C. vs. Ontario

In August 2004, Judge George Adams of the Ontario Court (General Division) issued a temporary injunction to prohibit sidewalk counselling near abortuaries. He also banned picketing within 500 feet of doctors’ homes. Offices of abortionists were also given a small bubble zone. This ruling will last until the trial. That case was a civil lawsuit where the Government of the Province of [...]

Is the B.C. decision the light and the end of the tunnel?

Supreme Court will eventually decide the importance of ruling and its impact across the land. The decision of Judge E.J. Cronin of the Provincial court of British Columbia lights one candle in the darkness of many court decision on the abortion issue. Pro-lifers have high praise Louisiana law

Pro-life supporters applauded a move by the Louisiana state legislature requiring doctors to tell women seeking abortion the physical and emotional risks of abortion and carrying a child to term. The move is part of the state’s newly restored informed consent law. The law also involved the distribution of the booklet, Abortion, Making a Decision, which features information on fetal development, methods [...]

“Because mom and dad said so,” still plays role in teens’ lives

In part two of her series, Gloria travels from pool halls to movie theatres to churches, studying the sexual attitudes of today’s youth and reaches some surprising conclusions. They say there’s a first time for everything. For me, it was getting kicked out of a grungy pool hall on boxing day. No – I wasn’t swearing or fighting or cheating. I was [...]
