The sexual revolution coincided with “flower power” and the arrival of The Pill. But the sexual revolution of the ’90s has a whole new flavour. Consider the evidence. In July, more than 7,100 teenagers attending the National Baptist Federation conference in Hull, brought thousands of pledge forms signed by their peers across Canada, promising to abstain from sex until marriage. The pledges were presented to David Kilgour, Deputy Speaker to the House, to pass on to Prime Minister Chrétien. They stated “I have ... (Continue reading)
Brave New World – Trying to establish some kind of legal boundaries on its out-of-control reproductive technologies industry, the British government has banned doctors from treating infertile women with eggs from aborted babies. Only eggs or ovarian tissue from live donors, who have given their consent, may now be used. However, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority stopped short of banning experimentation on eggs, including those from aborted babies. The decisions came as a result of a six-month public ... (Continue reading)
A mother of five whose children were attending Catholic schools in Toronto told me this true story at a recent meeting of school officials. A teacher in the gifted program one day had the grade eight class sit in a circle on the floor and had them pass a small rock from hand to hand, telling the rock how they felt. They were to speak and relate their spirit to the spirit of the rock. Her daughter who was in attendance ... (Continue reading)
Dr. John Billings’ opening discussion at the July 94 London conference on Natural Family Planning was a detailed explanation about the scientific verification of the Ovulation Method along with a brief history of how the method was developed. Billings began his clinical research in 1953 by poring over detailed medical literature. He discovered writing on cervical mucus secretion which dated back more than a hundred years, yet little attention had been paid to this information. It was from this that Billings ... Once considered one of the best in the world, the Canadian educational system has, over the past 20 years, lost some of its luster. Increasingly, parents are pulling their children from the traditional institutions and educating them at home or in alternative schools. The Interim has asked some of these parents to defend the choices they have made concerning their child’s education. Public education is still the best bet The school yard is alive with joyous sound. Children, faces alight ... (Continue reading)
The story is well known – male sees female, female sees male; their eyes meet, and soon, junior is produced. A classic tale, steeped in romance? Not quite. This scenario is commonly known in the regnum animalia as the “Mating Season.” It’s the time of year when you hear the throaty “burrup” of the bull frog, the “twit twee” of the birds, the vulgar “wolf whistle” on the street and the long expected “bring” of the telephone. Nature sounds ... (Continue reading)
Christian people have struggled for centuries with the issue of if and when killing a human being if justified. Christian society moved from a position of absolute refusal to even defend oneself from fatal attack to the writings of Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica in the fourteenth century, which remain the standard for Western law with regard to the use of force. The first criteria for the use of force is: The force used to prohibit harm to an individual must ... (Continue reading)

The Canadian Medical Association has come out strongly against allowing its doctors to practice euthanasia or physician assisted death. In a move which stunned observers at the annual convention, the CMA passed a strong resolution stating that “The Canadian Medical Association declares its members should specifically exclude the practice of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide.” Calling the practice “horrifying,” Dr. Daniel MacCarthy of Vancouver proposed the resolution which was supported by 93-74 count. Eighteen delegates abstained. Dr. Ted Boadway, policy director of the ... (Continue reading)
On July 29, the London Times carried an account of the judgment handed down by Sir Louis Blom-Cooper, Q.C., in a case involving housing. “Regina v. Newham London Borough Council.” For the purposes of the Housing Act of 1985, the judge ruled that an unborn child was “a person who might reasonably be expected to reside” with a pregnant homeless woman. He said it was unreasonable of Mrs. Janet Dada to refuse accommodation to the woman as unsuitable. His Lordship declared ... (Continue reading)

On August 19, the long awaited final report of the B.C. Task Force on Access to Contraception and Abortion was issued. NOTABLE QUOTES What message? “What kind of message are we sending, that dead women don’t matter, only dead abortionists.” Vicki Conroy, of Legal Action for Women, questioning why pro-abortionists were so vocal about the shooting death of abortionist John Britton but strangely silent about the death of a woman following a botched abortion in Pensacola, Fla.
